Every raw material is the beginning of a story. Lithium is indispensable for the energy transition. Nowhere in the world is there more of the coveted metal than in the highlands of Bolivia. Without lithium, no energy storage system, no data center, no electric car, and no smartphone would function. The Europeans want the raw material to save their automotive industry. The Bolivians want it to fight poverty. While the Bolivian government negotiates with companies from all over the world, civil society groups in rural areas are mobilizing, mainly organized by women. Patience is the most important quality that Michel Munier must bring with him on his excursions deep into the old, moss-covered forests of the Vosges. Equipped with a backpack, a walking stick, and a warm jacket, he is repeatedly drawn deep into the silence of the forest, to a very special place: a fir tree that has become his hideout. Beneath its branches, the old man seems to merge with nature. He has spent more than eight hundred nights there, listening, observing—always in search of foxes, roe deer, stags, lynxes, and the mysterious king of the forests: the capercaillie. His son Vincent h

Thirty years ago, Christoph Simpfendörfer’s Demeter farm stood on open fields at the edge of the town of Möhringen. Since then, the town has grown up around the farm, and it has transformed into an urban farm. Christoph Simpfendörfer sees this as a thoroughly fruitful development and believes that farmers belong in the city. Their work should be visible so that people are “grounded” and once again know what is needed for healthy agriculture. Simpfendörfer goes beyond organic farming and practices biodynamic agriculture. He explains the purpose and mode of action of biodynamic preparations and

Science is supposed to be objective: facts instead of feelings. But a new generation of scientists is experiencing how their research is being thrown off course by climate change. Instead of discovering the wonders of nature, Maria, a doctor of glaciology, Sebastian, professor of physical chemistry, and Nana, a molecular biologist, become chroniclers of a world in decline. But no one listens to them. What to do? Rather than retreating frustratedly into the ivory tower of their research, Maria, Sebastian, and Nana leave the laboratory and become activists, because they carry the weight of the w

The Jura Museum is based on the natural science collections of the Philosophical-Theological College. Several dedicated professors collected, researched, and taught there. And these rich treasures were preserved over many decades in the Eichstätt Seminary. The concept of the museum and the selection of the exhibits also have their own history. The lecture explores the interplay between humans and machines/robots, especially in creative processes. It argues for a mutual dependence of both on one another, whereby humans and machines, in the encounter of their being-more-than-themselves (their human as well as ‘machine unconscious’), produce emergent creations. These are to be understood as politically effective ‘utopian production’ of previously unimagined visions of the world. The workshop tests out this encounter by having participants enter into an interaction loop with an image-generating AI model. Speakers: Leonard Wunderlich &

Ingolstadt is the legendary setting of Victor Frankenstein's experiments. There he created a creature that he later could no longer control. The novel offers many points of reference for today's debates about robots and AI. We ask which ideas, hopes, and fears have long shaped today's debate about digitalization and artificial intelligence, even before our time. This creates a history of the future of AI: an exploration of the images and ideas that determine our relationship to the things we create — especially when they develop a dynamic of their own and seem to elude our control.
